This report was sent to us by Azad Ahmad, the Iranian political activist who is the spokesperson and chair of the Campaign “No to Deportation,” and spokesperson of the International Committee against Execution, Kurdistan Branch.
While he was getting ready to participate in the May 1st (International Workers’ Day) gathering outside the office of the Governor of Kirkuk, and preparing to address the crowd, Azad Ahmad was arrested behind the scenes by the Kirkuk Police.
Ahmad was taken to the police station in Ghuriyeh in Kirkuk . After being questioned by the police in Ghuriyeh, he was detained there until the following day, when he was taken to the Court of Kirkuk to be interrogated by a judge from the National Office of Investigation. Azad Ahmad reports that during this investigation, he was humiliated, he was blindfolded, and his hands were tied. He was accused of fictitious crimes and repeatedly threatened with deportation to Iran . After 4 hours of interrogation, he was transferred to the Information Detention Center , where he was kept in solitary confinement for three days, until the 7th of May 2011, when he was transferred to the common detention center in Kirkuk . The following day, the 8th of May 2011, he was interrogated again by the Information Office of Kirkuk, and put under the same pressures and threats for 3 more hours.
On the 9th of May 2011, Azad Ahmad was taken to Court of Kirkuk once again, and the judge took a decision (based on an unknown rationale) to transfer Ahmad to the city of Baghdad . Azad Ahmad opposed the decision to be transferred to Baghdad and after a few days, the Information Office of Kirkuk changed the decision from a transfer to Baghdad to a transfer to Diyala Province . This decision also was protested by Azad Ahmad, and this time also by his friends and supporters. Finally, on the 29th of May 2011, he was transferred to the border city Qaladizeh, where, after 3 days’ detention, he was bailed out against 2 million Iraqi dinars (USD $1,716).
Iranian political refugees are leaving Iran because of the persecution, imprisonment, torture, and execution of political prisoners in the slaughterhouses of the Islamic Republic, and due to the lack of essential freedoms in Iran . They enter other countries under the harshest circumstances, and may, due to the shared border with Iraq and especially due to the old bilateral relationship between Iranian and Iraqi Kurds, attempt to take refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan. However, instead of being received in security and safety by the Iraqi Kurdistan authorities, they are left without assistance of any kind, be it material or moral support. They are under pressure, living under the worst circumstances, and in many cases, when they have protested against these circumstances, for these protests, or under other excuses like participation in protests, gatherings, or demonstrations against the authorities, are being detained, imprisoned, and deported to Iran .
It is common knowledge that during the past few months, more than 45 political refugees and non-political refugees have been deported to Iran , and no one knows what has become of them.
